As I was pulling into Burger King on Kirby I noticed the McDonald's across the street. My husband had requested a McMuffin, but since I was in a hurry and already approaching the BK drive-through, I decided to stick with BK.
When I placed my order for a Breakfast Muffin Sandwich, a hash brown, and a sausage burrito and the woman told me my total was $4.21, I groaned. This cheap meal, I was sure, would be the worst thing I had ever eaten.
And guess what?
This was the BEST fast food breakfast I have had in ages! Sure, it's "bad" in all the usual ways--high in calories, fat and sodium, while low in nutritional value--but it was absolutely delicious. I am a total Burger King breakfast convert.
I am not the biggest fan of breakfast sausage in general, and certainly not fast food breakfast sausage, but BK serves up a nice portion, and without the gristly bits you usually find in those pre-made patties. The cheese was really melty, and the egg product was warmed all the way through, and tasted as close to real eggs as an egg product can get.
The English muffin on the sandwich was decent, but I loved the flour tortilla on the burrito--it was really soft, and also completely warm. One of my biggest problems with fast food is when the components are not all heated through, but BK delivered a warm and satisfying breakfast with great flavor. My husband and I agreed that the hash brown bites surpassed McD's hash brown patties in flavor; I thought they were less greasy, too.
For the record, this breakfast muffin sandwich is a healthier option than the similar BK breakfast sandwich served on a biscuit; opting for the muffin slashes over 100 calories, 7 grams of fat, and 650 mg of sodium. If you're already on the BK train, keep that in mind.
