Fast Times: Wendy's Chicken Sandwich and Apple Parfait
Quality is Our Recipe®, or so claims Wendy's website. I have been noticing the commercials for the New Caramel Apple Frosty™ Parfaits on television lately, and thought it would be a great way to revisit a childhood favorite.
I zipped right through the drive-through, ordering a Monterey Ranch Crispy Chicken Sandwich and a *New* Caramel Apple Frosty™ Parfait, as well as a small Original Frosty from the 99¢ menu for my companion. I took a quick bite of the original Frosty and it was just as I remembered it--rich, smooth, and chocolaty. I couldn't wait to dig into my Caramel Apple Parfait.
But first, the sandwich.
Oh, the sandwich. Whatever sandwich was placed in my to-go bag, I can assure you it was not a Monterey Ranch Crispy Chicken Sandwich. In fact, I would say the words "ranch," "crispy," and "chicken" are all extremely generous terms for whatever came between the two ends of that bun. As for the Monterey? Non-existent. No cheese came along for the ride. The chicken patty was like an oversize Tyson chicken nugget, slathered with mayo (BLECH) and topped with a single, wilted leaf of iceberg lettuce. Apparently, what I got was the basic "Crispy Chicken Sandwich." Frankly, I'm not sure the addition of cheese and a zesty ranch sauce could really save the thing, but it would have been nice to get what I ordered.
In short: Fail.
On to the Caramel Apple Parfait! Described as "our creamy, classic Frosty swirled with all-natural brown sugar granola, fresh red and green apple slices, and real caramel," this is the treat that prompted my visit in the first place. While the ice cream and caramel were tasty enough, I must point out that I got plenty of green, but no red apple slices. And the "all-natural brown sugar granola" was kind of chewy--more like sugary raw oats than granola. I would have done a lot better with an original Wendy's burger and a regular Frosty.
No more getting fancy for me at Wendy's. I'm sticking with the old-school favorites
