Health Department Roundup: Just the Facts, Mostly

Normally we go all Popeye Doyle on the inspection reports, doing things our way, asking for forgiveness rather than requesting permission. We'd even consider purchasing an ankle holster if we were allowed to rub up against girls while on the clock. (Just kidding, it's a quick-draw gimmick.) Today, though, we've got a headache and a lot of work to do, so it's strictly the facts, Joe Friday-style. Except with more squinting.

We're glad we're doing this straight-laced, because this first entry wouldn't be easy to joke about. Texas Children's Hospital's food court (6702 Fannin) earned a citation for six violations, including dirty non-food-contact surfaces (corrected on site); ice machine not set up to prevent contamination of ice; storage not set up to prevent cross-contamination of food; equipment or utensils not designed or maintained properly; and plumbing not sized or maintained properly.

Goode Co. BBQ (5109 Kirby) earned two violations and no citation for lighting without proper shielding, and for not taking proper measures to fight the potential presence of rodents and insects. Golden Island Chinese Restaurant (901 N. Shepherd) earned ten violations during a recent routine inspection, but managed to avoid getting cited by the city. Their issues included food-contact equipment/surfaces not cleaned at least every four hours; storage not set up to prevent cross-contamination of food; food not protected from potential contamination from other non-food sources, including everything from sneezes to "toxic materials"; dirty fans; and food stored too close to the ground. All the violations listed here were corrected on site.

The Domino's at 3507 Elgin earned a citation for improper use of moist cleaning cloths and no manager with a Food Service Manager's Certification. This is a chain pizza place next to a big college and near a high-crime area. Are they retaining employees long enough to actually make pizzas? If so, then consider that a victory.

Heights Ashbury Coffeehouse (242 W. 19th) earned just two violations. The second, hand-washing sink not accessible to employees at all times, is way less terrifying than the first, improperly designed heating/vent/air conditioning system. We are the opposite of Game of Thrones -- in Houston, the fact that summer is coming is cause for fear.
