Ingredient of the Week: Cactus Honey Powder
What is it?
This Arizona Farm Cactus Honey Powder is a bit of an enigma. After a little research online, I found several sources, including a blog called TheKitchn.com, that states that "cactus honey" is a term used to describe agave nectar, NOT bee-produced honey made from the cactus flower.
But listed on the ingredients for this "honey" powder were, "pure honey" and maltodextrin. I couldn't find a contact number or email to get in touch with the company to clear up their definition of "pure honey," but just like the other brands mentioned throughout the web, this product might actually be freeze-dried granules of agave nectar.
Adding to my confusion: finding a site for a different brand of cactus honey powder that claims their product originates from actual bee-produced honey. They even list the steps they take (which involves bees, cactus flowers, honeycombs and beekeepers) to get to the final product, which is then exported to Japan.
Anyone that could shed light on the actuality of ingredients in this product will be my hero.
How is it used?
Whether it's honey as we all know it or agave nectar, these little granules (that remind me a little of non-melting, smaller Dippin Dots) would work in place of regular, refined sugar in any recipe.
Where can I find it in Houston?
Apparently, it's a popular product in the Korean community. I found this bag at Super H Mart, but assume that it's also available at 99 Ranch Market and other Asian grocery stores throughout town.
