It's All in the Packaging

The mango cake ($10, or two for $15) at Jungle Cafe (9110-A Bellaire Boulevard, 713-272-6633) is more than an unbelievably delicious cake -- it's a visual masterpiece, packaged for gift-giving and lots of "oohs" and "aahs." The Taiwanese husband-and-wife team Jesse and Angela Wu, who trained in Japan and Paris, brought their Western-style, handmade chocolates and cakes to Houston a couple of years ago. The rectangular version of the mango cake -- a traditional round one is also available -- is roughly the size of a brick. Three incredibly moist layers of sponge cake are interspersed with a mousselike mango cream, then topped with a mango glaze and two beautifully decorated handmade chocolates. The decadent treat is presented on a removable tray inside a gorgeous box, which comes with an attractive, sturdy carrying bag.
