JONNY'S SPORTS BAR
Having spent several purple-hazed semesters at TCU, I feel a kinship to the Horned Frogs. So last Saturday, I headed for Jonny's Sports Bar (2511 Bissonnet, 713-521-9928, a relatively new bar, to watch my team take on the Longhorns. Having taught college for a couple of years, I felt right at home in a college bar. College dudes young and old were sprawled on leather couches, their feet up on coffee tables, grabbing beers from buckets and watching big-screen gridiron. Joey, my mixologist, described several house specialties; I ordered a cold beer to help me decide. While UT kicked TCU's ass, my cocktail dilemma turned into several more longnecks. I played some beer pong, then checked out the patio and crank-called some old friends. Back at the bar, as Joey was suggesting more drinks, the Sigma Phi sitting next to me suggested a shot of tequila. Looking into his alarmingly blue eyes, I was torn between asking him to be the teacher's pet and helping him with his homework. Instead, I opted for a Jonny's Blow Pop — a shot of Cointreau topped off with Rockstar energy drink. Suddenly fueled by more than school spirit, I realized the game was over and it was time to head out. The free cab ride sign on the exit door earned this bar an A+.
