We get a ton of products across our desks here at the Press offices. Mostly, they're CDs for the music guys, boxes filled with tuna and panties or alcohol-spiked chocolate milk. But we never get baby food.
Until last week, when a box of Peter Rabbit Organics baby food showed up on my desk, complete with three baby food samples inside.
Now I know next to nothing about babies. But just taking one look at these enormous pouches, I wondered if these squeezable baby food packets were really meant for a tiny baby. There was a lot of carrot puree in there. A lot.
And not having any babies handy, I decided to test the food on the next best thing: assistant music editor Craig Hlavaty.
Between the two of us, we tasted all three packets of food, with the Sweet Potato, Corn and Apple packet emerging as the clear winner. Surprisingly, however, the other two flavors -- Pea, Spinach and Apple, and Carrot, Squash and Apple -- were pretty good, too. None of the three tasted, well, like baby food. More like a vegetable-and-fruit puree.
After going through the press release that accompanied the pouches, I saw why they were so large: They're meant for infants all the way through elementary school-aged kids. And they're resealable. Makes a lot more sense (although neither Hlavaty nor myself could figure out how to reseal them; I think we broke the caps off).

The food inside the pouches is also organic and has no additional sugar or any artificial anything added, something my own mother would have appreciated. That crazy woman made all of my baby food herself in a food processor. I think if Peter Rabbit pouches had been available back in the unspecified decade of my childhood, she would have gladly snatched those up instead.
