Odd Pair: Vinho Verde Branco Sonalto and Grilled Cheese
Yep, the Portuguese Vinho Verde rears its beautiful head once again - this time under the odd pair category. So sue me, I can't stay away from the light, tasty wine. It's refreshing and has an everyday versatility, not unlike the everyday viewing pleasures of The Big Lebowski. So why not pair it with another everyday kinda food like grilled cheese?
Simple grilled cheese is a concoction of gooey, buttery richness that tends to soothe the soul as well as the appetite. If done right, it's a bit rich and heavy. With a sip of effervescent white wine to deliver a swift kick to your palate, this combination is the gift that keeps on giving.. The bright acidity and cooling Vinho Verde keep rebooting the taste buds, giving them the gusto to tackle the butter-soaked toasted bread and melted cheese over and over and over again, until the last bite of crust has disappeared from the plate.
The only problem is that the wine encourages you to eat more grilled cheese, and the grilled cheese begs for more palate-clearing wine sips, which, as you may have guessed, can lead to an evening of gluttony and a morning of bowel discomforts. However, it's totally worth the risk. And if you don't agree, I leave you with the famous words of The Dude: "Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man."
