KA Sushi, 1901 North Shepherd, has had its soft opening. The Heights-area sushi eatery is brought to you by Pak Tsui of Fat Bao, and it's definitely not just sushi; the menu also sports oxtail or lobster ramen, Wagyu steak and other traditional Japanese dishes with a modern twist. Keep an eye on
the Facebook page for news of an upcoming grand opening celebration.
The restaurant formerly known as Mission Burrito and more recently known as
Überrito has closed its original location at 2245 West Alabama after 20 years of operation. Out of that building grew a national franchise, and, although we're sad to see it go, there's another location nearby at 1609 Durham where you can find the same burritos, tacos and Que Mas salad that you've come to love.
Gatlin's BBQ, 3510 Ella, will reopen on September 11 in its new, much larger location after a seven-month wait. Greg Gatlin spent his break from the kitchen collaborating with Bryan Caswell at
Jackson St. BBQ at 209 Jackson,
but now he's back to calling his own shots. The new menu will even include quail and fish once the restaurant gets into the swing of things,
says Greg Morago of the Houston Chronicle.
If you've been missing your six-course prix fixe meals from
Oxheart, 1302 Nance, don't worry; the swanky Houston favorite is back in business after a brief one-month sabbatical. Now you can get that
collard-greens-stuffed guinea hen you've been craving.
Ricky Craig of the
Hubcap Grill, 1133 West 19th, has forged a partnership with Josh Martinez of the recently closed
Chicken Ranch and
The Modular food truck to open a Gulf Coast kitchen at 2021 Strand in Galveston,
according to Alison Cook at the Houston Chronicle. The poboy meats will all be cooked in-house and fresh seafood will abound at the new venture, which could open as early as December and will probably be called
Forks & Loaves.
Asia Market has completed its move to 4822 Fulton, which you can very easily access via the Red Line of the Metrorail. It's become more of a restaurant than its previous incarnation as a grocery that has food, to the glee of its large pool of regular clientele.
Finally, there's a new Persian restaurant at 2691 Wilcrest in Westchase.
Avesta Persian Grill specializes in meats and stews, according to the Yelp blurb, and
the reviews are rapturous. Several diners can't get over the hummus alone, not to mention the several varieties of rice.
That's all of this week's restaurant openings and closings! If you know of something we missed, leave us a comment or
