Recipe: The Hot Flamingo

A recent trip to the farmers' market left me with a big bag of strawberries and fresh cayenne peppers. Luckily, I also had a big bottle of Dulce Vida tequila, so I got to work mixing up some tasty cocktails. This recipe was the best of the bunch, a fiery combination of peppers, silky smooth honey, and a burst of fresh ripe berries.

The Hot Flamingo

  • 2 strawberries, hulled
  • Cayenne pepper, seeded, cut into 1-inch strips
  • 1 ounce honey water*
  • 1 ½ ounces tequila
  • Soda

Muddle strawberries, pepper, and honey syrup in the small shaker tin. Add tequila. Add a small splash of soda. Shake gently. Strain the liquid into a highball glass full of ice. Top with more soda. Garnish with a slice of strawberry.

*To make the honey water, simply combine equal parts of honey and hot water, stirring until smooth. This allows for the drink to absorb the honey better, rather than it all staying on the bottom of the glass.
