Robb Walsh's 100 Favorite Houston Dishes #32 Cheese Enchiladas with Fried Eggs at Los Dos Amigos

Over the course of the next few months, I'm counting down 100 of my favorite Houston dishes. I chose some because they are such quintessential Houston creations, others for their cultural or historical significance, and others because they are just so damn tasty. #32 Cheese Enchiladas with Fried Eggs at Los Dos Amigos

At $7.25, three enchiladas topped with two fried eggs is a pretty expensive breakfast at Los Dos Amigos. The eggs-on enchiladas aren't even on the breakfast menu; they're listed with the entrées. But never mind, this is the desayuno de campiones.

Los Dos is tiny. There are half a dozen tables covered in plastic tablecloths, several booths along the wall, and a six-seat Formica counter in the L-shaped dining room. Breakfast and lunch are booming. If you are looking for bargains, breakfast tacos are cheap, and so are the breakfast specials before ten o'clock.

For a change of pace, stop in on Wednesday for lunch, when the $5.75 daily special is enchiladas suizas, three chicken enchiladas in a white cheese and sour cream sauce with beans and rice. They don't serve frozen margaritas, and there isn't any beer either. So you can have the eatery pretty much to yourself at dinnertime. And of course, you can get cheese enchiladas and fried eggs for dinner too.
