Robb Walsh's 100 Favorite Houston Dishes: #59 Whataburger Triple Meat, Triple Cheese with Bacon and Jalapeños
Over the course of the next few months, I'm counting down 100 of my favorite Houston dishes. I chose some because they are such quintessential Houston creations, others for their cultural or historical significance, and others because they are just so damn tasty. #59 Whataburger Triple Meat, Triple Cheese with Bacon and Jalapeños
In the wee hours of the morning when everything else is closed -- it's Whataburger that comes to my rescue. I know the burger patties are previously frozen. I know it's not perfect, but I swear allegiance to Houston's favorite fast food burger anyway. Over the course of the year, I eat more than a few.
Whataburger is the benchmark by which Texas burgers are measured. Whenever I try a new burger, the first question I ask myself is: "Is this really any better than a Whataburger?" I realize that I have ranked Whataburger higher than several very good local burgers. But I think it deserves the higher ranking because of its emblematic status.
I usually opt for the demure #2 (double meat, double cheese) with jalapeños. But I believe that the ultimate expression of the Whataburger aesthetic is the triple meat, triple cheese with bacon and jalapeño peppers.
