Robb Walsh's 100 Favorite Houston Dishes: #61 Tom Kha Gai at Thai Choice on Wilcrest
Over the course of the next few months, I'm counting down 100 of my favorite Houston dishes. I chose some because they are such quintessential Houston creations, others for their cultural or historical significance, and others because they are just so damn tasty. #61 Tom Kha Gai at Thai Choice on Wilcrest
The tom kha gai (coconut soup with chicken) at Thai Choice restaurant on Wilcrest at Westheimer was wonderfully rich with lots of coconut, galangal, and mushroom flavor. But I asked for it "Thai hot," and what I got wasn't very spicy at all. The new owners of the restaurant are from Florida and evidently they are used to cooking for retirees with wimpy palates. When the waiter asked how everything was, I told him that the kitchen could make the soup a lot hotter for Houstonian tastes.
After eating the rest of our meal and paying the bill we were on the way out the door when the waiter, who turned out to be the owner, caught up to us with a to-go order that we hadn't asked for. He said it was another order of tom kha gai, only this one was really hot. I ate it for lunch the next day with tears running down my cheeks. What a lovely bowl of soup that was.
But be forewarned, you have to insist on really hot food here.
