Robb Walsh's 100 Favorite Houston Dishes: #72 The Basil Inferno at Thai Bistro
Over the course of the next few months, I'm counting down 100 of my favorite Houston dishes. I chose some because they are such quintessential Houston creations, others for their cultural or historical significance, and others because they are just so damn tasty. #72 The Basil Inferno at Thai Bistro
The "Basil Inferno" with chicken appears on Thai Bistro's inexpensive lunch menu. "That's our most popular lunch special," the waitress said when I ordered it. It's easy to see why. The heady blast of Thai basil and fresh Thai chile is a jolt to the senses. The herbs and peppers are combined with garlic, onions, mushrooms, bell pepper and thin-sliced white meat chicken, and every bite is a thrill. The popular "Basil Inferno" entrée can be ordered with shrimp, chicken or pork.
The original Thai Bistro is located on the Southwest Freeway near Buffalo Speedway. It's got a well-deserved reputation for serving top-quality Thai food in an upscale white-linen-tablecloth setting. The Thai curries are outstanding -- try the shrimp and pineapple in spicy red curry sometime. There's now a second location of Thai Bistro on Westheimer near Kirkwood, and it's carrying on the high standards of the original.
