Robb Walsh's 100 Favorite Houston Dishes: #79 Lamb Dumplings at Lucky Pot, 9888 Bellaire
Over the course of the next few months, I'm counting down 100 of my favorite Houston dishes. I chose some because they are such quintessential Houston creations, others for their cultural or historical significance, and others because they are just so damn tasty. #79 Lamb Dumplings at Lucky Pot, 9888 Bellaire
My tablemates were divided. Some of them thought the dumpling skins on the lamb dumplings at Lucky Pot were too thick. I loved the thick texture. And I really enjoyed the rich, seasoned lamb meat filling inside. We also ate some wonderful eggplant and a whole croaker fish in brown sauce. But the most popular thing to order at this Northern Chinese restaurant is noodle soup.
All ten tables at Lucky Pot are full every day at lunch time, and everybody seems to be eating a huge bowl of hearty, thick-cut, homemade noodles in broth. The lamb noodles, with tender chunks of meat and fresh spinach leaves, are good. But the house special noodle soup -- with big chunks of Chinese bacon, shiitake mushrooms, black mushrooms and dried tofu -- is better. It's a little like fresh, rough-cut pasta in a mushroom-and-bacon sauce.
Along with lamb dumplings, there are also some excellent pork and leek dumplings on the menu. An order of 16 fat dumplings goes for $4.95.
