Sampler Plate: This Week in Food Blogs

Each week, we put together a sampler plate of the most interesting links from both local and national food blogs. Know a blog we should be paying particular attention to? Leave the address in the comments section below.

Sunset: Jonathan Gold, Pulitzer Prize-winner and food critic for our sister paper in Los Angeles, has listed the 10 worst food trends in recent memory. And for once with a list of this type, I agree with every single thing listed. Be gone, synthetic truffle oil!

29-95: J.C. Reid takes a look at Rudy's Bar-B-Q through the lens of modern East Texas barbecue, which has incorporated a strong Central Texas bent. Is it the best barbecue in Houston? Or just the best barbecue you can get at 10 p.m.?

My Table: The greatest dining deals in town are to be found at high-end places doing prix fixe feasts at lunch. Our own Mai Pham wraps up the best prix fixe menus in town at the moment, doing all the legwork for you so that all you have to do is show up and eat.

Hummingbird Tongues: I especially enjoy reading cookbook reviews when they're as fun and playful as the cookbook itself. Check out Rachael's review of Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams at Home and tell me you don't want to rush out and purchase a copy for yourself.

Health & Fitness: The fitness mag focused on Houston in its latest issue, naming five of Houston's top chefs and discussing their core cooking philosophies. I like Randy Evans's simple answer the best: "Cook with the best, seasonal ingredients Texas has to offer and allow the quality of the product to shine through."

Jessica, a Broad: It's been a trip living vicariously through Houstonian Jessica Walters, who packed up and moved to Turkey for a year, as she writes about her experiences living in Istanbul and slowly learning her way around the country, its language and its food. This latest post, however, is by friend and foodie Victoria Rittinger -- one of previous Burger Bracket judges, in fact -- who recently visited Walters in Turkey: a recap of their epic food tour as they took pains to stay as far away from tourist fare as possible.

KEEP THE HOUSTON PRESS FREE... Since we started the Houston Press, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Houston, and we'd like to keep it that way. With local media under siege, it's more important than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" program, allowing us to keep offering readers access to our incisive coverage of local news, food and culture with no paywalls.
