The 5 Best Things to Eat or Drink This Weekend: Good Vibes, Good Dogs and Good Coffee
Good Vibes Party @ Liberty Station Friday, 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. 2101 Washington
Bravado Spice is at it again with their second Good Vibes Party after the great success of their first fête in July that attracted 300 people. The parties are the brainchild of James Nelson and his partner Jeremiah Tallerine, who own Bravado Spice Company and are super invested in all things local. Half farmers' market, half foodie rave, the party will have multiple local vendors and food trucks including Jolly Roger Gourmet Jams, Real Dill Pickles, Mustachestuff.com, Urban Izzy, Man Ready Merchantile, Shoe Bar, Muiishi Makaritos and Phamily Bites. Music will be provided by Bruce Hansen and the RACKET, Thousand Colors and Thrill of Seconds. Buffalo Bayou will also be there with plenty of beer. Get there early to snatch up some great local products before they're gone.
Animal lovers unite this Saturday for an evening of dogs and doggone good beer. Underdogs Sports Pub is hosting an event for Friends for Life to raise money for homeless animals. A $10 donation at the door will get you a Friends For Life keepsake koozie and a raffle ticket, and more raffle tickets are available for purchase. Guests are encouraged to bring their own pups to the dog-friendly venue, and adoptable dogs will be hanging around as well, hoping to find a forever family. The raffle will feature pet-related giveaways from Sterling McCall Lexus, and Pi Pizza Truck will provide food. If you've been looking for a new furry family member, perhaps you'll find one at Pints for Pups. If nothing else, you'll be drinking and supporting a great cause!
Meet the Coffee Farmer @ Paper Co. Coffee Saturday, 7:30 p.m. 1100 Elder
You've heard of "meet the brewmaster" or "meet the vintner" events, but have you ever been to a "meet the coffee farmer" event? Well, after Saturday, you'll be able to say you have! Paper Co. Coffee is celebrating its grand opening by welcoming Diego Chavarria, a 7th generation coffee farmer from Nicaragua, to talk about the business of coffee. According to the press release, he'll share details about "the struggles of a small farmer, the dangerous impact of volatile commodity markets (particularly the coffee crisis that occurred in the early 2000s) and how direct trade partners and consumers can change lives and communities." There will be an open bar -- an espresso bar that is -- and coffee and food pairings following Chavarria's talk.
Blacksmith By Night: Episode 5 Featuring Michael Gaspard @ Blacksmith Sunday, 5 p.m. 1018 Westheimer
Sunday is the fifth installment in a series of pop-up dinners hosted by Blacksmith. This dinner will feature Michael Gaspard with guests Brandon Silva and Justin Basye. The coffee shop closes at 5 p.m. every day, but once a month, at 5:01, local chefs take over and serve a pop-up meal that, so far, has been delighting crowds. Aside from the chefs involved, Blacksmith isn't offering many details about the latest event. All the Facebook page says is, "Wear sweatpants- these guys mean business..." Um, awesome.
El Gran Malo's 2nd Birthday @ El Gran Malo Sunday, 4 p.m. to 12 a.m. 2307 Ella
El Gran Malo will be celebrating its second birthday on Sunday with food and drink specials all day long. The Timbergrove Tex-Mex joint is well known for both tacos and tequila, so there will be no shortage of celebratory margaritas with house infusions like golden beet or pecan and cayenne. A large crowd has already RSVPed on the event's Facebook page, and well wishers are writing birthday messages to the now two-year-old wolf. The folks are known for partying hard, so it's sure to be a great celebration. Thankfully, the bar only stays open until midnight on Sunday, or work on Monday might not happen.
