This Week in Food Blogs: Make Charles Dickens's Eggnog
Aw yeah, it's eggnog time!

Just in time for Christmas, Emily Wallace at Garden & Gun posts Mississippi author Eudora Welty's recipe for eggnog. Welty, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1973 for The Optimist's Daughter, got the recipe from her mother, who in turn attributed the recipe to Charles Dickens. Was it really Dickens' recipe? It's hard to say, but regardless, the recipe dates back to the 1800s and uses plenty of bourbon. Note that this also uses raw eggs, so if you have concerns about salmonella, you'll want to use pasteurized eggs.
Since we're talking about eggnog, did you know that it can be aged for months--even a year!--to become even more mellow and creamy? If you're curious about that, check out Alton Brown's recipe and procedure for his aged eggnog.
Perhaps to go with the eggnog, you'd like to try your hand at Peppermint Bark Black Bean Brownie Bites? No? Well, don't knock them if you haven't had them. Claire at The Petite Professional blog says these are both good and good for you. She should know: her day job is that of a registered dietician with Snap Kitchen. The recipe makes use of Black Bean Brownie Mix by a company called Healthier Eats.
There are looks at restaurants in several areas around town this week. Russell at Eat More Burgers visits the new Houston location of Doc's Motor Works (1303 Westheimer). The chain originated in Austin. He orders the Blackened Jalapeno Cheddar Burger, but unfortunately finds the bell peppers that come on top are unappealing. Find out what he recommends you order there instead.
Hank On Food checks out D'marcos Pizzeria in Sugar Land. It belongs to Chicago native D'Marco Jenkins so, as you might expect, the specialty here is deep dish pizza. It can take a very long time to bake all the way through, so Hank has some valuable information on what days to call ahead and which days to just show up. Overall, the pizza got an A+.
Dalida at Brunch & Conversation takes us to the Pollo Tropical location in the Woodlake/Galleria area (6522 Westheimer). The atmosphere reminds her of a beachfront restaurant in Miami. She found the roasted half-chicken, rice and spiked mango juice to all be quite good.
It's been too long since we checked in on Kim at Adventures In a Newish City and we nearly missed this post on what she says is the best happy hour in Houston. It's at Oishii (3764 Richmond). At happy hour, there are $3 sakes and several buy-one-get-one-free appetizers. Check out the mini-feast Kim and her friend had over there for a total cost of around $11 per person.
Thanks to the "Patty & David Said..." blog for contacting us last week to let us know they're out there. Their most recent visit was to Arirang Korea Restaurant. While they loved the banchan and the dumplings, they found the tabletop grill underpowered and prices higher than expected.
