For the first two weeks in May, Cloud 10 Creamery, 5216 Morningside, will offer a one-of-kind cloud bar, called the Fudgemallow Delight Cloud Bar. The cloud bar is a collaboration with Fresh Arts, an organization dedicated to supporting Houston's individual artists and indie groups, in honor of the group's upcoming Willy Wonka-themed GUMBALL Gala on Friday, May 15. Designed by Chef Chris Leung, each bar features special "Wonka" toppers in orange, blue and green. For every cloud bar sold ($5.25 each), Cloud 10 will donate $1 to Fresh Arts.
Cinco de Mayo, Mexico's celebration of the unlikely victory at the Battle of Puebla, may have become a somewhat misconstrued American celebration, but The Pastry War, 310 Main, still plans on partying (Puebla is one of Mexico's most exciting mezcal-producing states, after all). On Tuesday, May 5 from 4 p.m. to midnight, try cocteles from their brand new cocktail menu and enjoy all day happy hour with upgraded $5 house margaritas, $3 Mexican beers and free games of pool. There will also be tamales, queso and salsa, and elotes (Mexican street corn) on the stick to nosh on. But the grand event is a Luchador Thumb Wrestling Competition, which will begin at 7 p.m. Sign up from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., then get your thumb painted at the bar (or show up with your own design) and compete to win a $200 gift certificate to Hugo's, in addition to the ultimate bragging rights.
Whole Foods Market will host a Community Giving Day on Thursday, May 7, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to benefit Houston Food Bank's Empty Bowls Houston event, which brings together local artists and craftspeople to help fight hunger in our community. In addition to donating 5 percent of the day's net sales from its seven metro Houston locations, the participating stores will be hosting Empty Bowls Houston committee members and local artists, who will demonstrate their crafts, sell bowls and take advance donations for the 11th annual Empty Bowls Houston, to be held Saturday, May 16.
Camerata at Paulie's, 1834 Westheimer, will be hosting a Summer Wines Class on Saturday, May 9 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Come taste as Advanced Sommelier David Keck takes you through a plethora of wines that are perfect for the patio -- Pink, Riesling, Bubbles and some lighter reds that will work as well. And since Camerata has a retail license, the class will be a perfect time to load up the cellar for a summer of delicious drinking. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $60 per person.
The CultureMap Tastermakers Awards, an annual celebration of the talent in Houston's food and drink community, will be held on Tuesday, May 13 at Silver Street Studios, 2000 Edwards. From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., honor the community while you enjoy drinks and nosh on food from some the best local spots. Tickets are available for purchase in advance ($35 for young professionals, $45 for general admission, $55 for VIP).
Ready to get your brew on? Join Houston Press and Lucky's Pub in celebrating the 4th Annual BrewFest on Saturday, May 16 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Silver Street Station, 1500 Silver. Hit the indoor/outdoor beer-sampling event and festival for a taste of craft beers and awesome eats from local food trucks as you listen to live music. Eight (3-ounce) beer samples are included in the ticket price ($35 in advance, $45 day of). All Guests must be 21+, with a Valid I.D.
