A new bar has opened in the Kirby neighborhood, and it's inside a grocery store. On Friday, January 3, Whole Foods on Kirby celebrated the grand opening of the Kirbside Bar, and now you have a place to sit down and grab a drink while out shopping for groceries.

Kirbside Bar is similar to the one inside the Montrose Whole Foods, but Kirbside -- Whole Foods' 95th beer and wine bar -- appears to be larger, has more chairs and tables and is located at the front of the store rather than in the back.

Karbach Brewing Co. offered a few special and classic brews during the launch party, while the guys from Bravado Spice served samples of their Pineapple and Habanero and San Patricio hot sauces.

Word spread quickly about the launch party on Friday. Lucky people who came early snatched seats at the U-shaped bar, while stragglers (including me) stood in the back hoping to catch the attention of the wide-eyed bartenders.

This story continues on the next page.

Although the launch was packed, those not-so-fortunate guests left seat-less at the bar were able to enjoy the Karbach brews on tap, including Hopadillo IPA, Yule Shoot Your Eye Out, 003 Hellfighter Imperial Porter (as well as 007) and 008 Fra-Gee-Lay.

The launch party featured Karbach brews, but Kirbside Bar will regularly serve a variety of other beers and wines, including Belgian and gluten-free beers and red, white, bubbly and rose wines by the glass.

The bar will also offer cheese plates ranging between $7 and $20, and pizza and sandwiches for $8 to $10.

While the freshly prepared pizzas and sandwiches are perfect for lunch or dinner, the cheese plates are great for an evening snack paired with a glass of beer or wine -- plates with prosciutto, salami and locally-sourced ingredients are a tad more expensive, but The Mixed Milk plate for $10 is an excellent snack to share with a friend or eat by yourself with a beer. The creamy Lonestar goat cheese, nutty 3-month aged Manchego, smoked seaside cheddar and fig jam with water crackers go hand-in-hand with a crisp, sweet beer or wine.

The Kirbside Bar opens at 11 a.m. every day and Happy Hour is Monday through Thursday from 2-5 p.m. Every Monday from 6-8 p.m. customers can enjoy a slice of pizza and pint of beer for $5; on Wednesdays customers can get $3 select pints, $4 select wines by the glass and Happy Hour food specials during Hump Day Happy Hour from 6-8 p.m.; and on Fridays, Kirbside Bar will serve $3 local pints from 3-6 p.m.
