Jamie Francies Jr., 81, of Abilene, the first black man to organize a trail ride to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, put together the Prairie View Trail Ride in 1958. The ride is still in existence today.

Black cowboys didn't get to the big show in Houston by the most direct route, but they made it all the same. PHOTOS BY CHRIS CURRY
