Olivewood Cemetery

Olivewood Cemetery, the first cemetery for Houston's freedmen after the Civil War, was built on land that was a burial ground for slaves so its roots go back more than 150 years. But now, most of the 8 acres are overgrown and headstones are covered over. In addition, some of the graves are falling victim to White Oak Bayou which keeps eating away at one of the cemetery's edges. It's about to be dedicated as a historical site, and next weekend politicos and big shots will all be in attendance for the dedication ceremony. Here's what Olivewood Cemetery looks like now.
