Rowdy Shaw, a Senior Field Responder with The Humane Society of the United States, holds a dog during a veterinarian check at a temporary shelter in Conroe, TX on Wednesday, July 18, 2012. Over 300 dogs were rescued from a house in the area.

After 298 dogs were seized from the Spindletop Dog refuge in Montgomery County, staff and volunteers from animal welfare groups, as well as local authorities, worked around the clock to care for the neglected dogs. Overseeing the project was the Humane Society of the United States, which provided these pictures from inside the temporary shelter at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.
