Though several different organizations are holding celebrations in honor of the late civil rights icon, the Black Heritage Society’s 32nd Annual Original Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade Celebration has the longest history. Expect ornate floats, high-stepping bands, lively organizations promoting their causes and politicians trolling for votes. The parade’s theme is “Dreamkeepers,” in recognition of individuals who have made positive impacts on their communities. “The spirit of the greatest civil rights leader who ever lived, lives on through the lives of others,” notes parade founder Ovide Duncantell Sr. “We call these individuals ‘dreamkeepers.'” Amen! 10 a.m. Minute Maid Park, 501 Crawford.
