The Astros went down to defeat last night, losing 9-1 to the Arizona Diamondbacks. And the game was not as close as the score indicated. This was the fifth straight defeat for the Astros, and seventh loss in the last eight games.
My editor โ and yes I do have one, though he probably doesnโt want to admit it โ told me that I could take a break and stop watching the Astros every night. And you know what, it has been pretty damn painful watching this team, but recently, itโs been like one of those clown cars at the circus โ youโve just canโt stop watching because youโre wondering just how many clowns are in the car, or in the Astros dugout.
Phil Garnerโs plan for breaking the losing streak was to start Orlando Palmeiro in right field. And, so as to please the people driving up to Phoenix from Tucson (damn you, Jason, for telling me that Biggio comment about people driving in to see him play), Biggio once again led off.
As I wrote yesterday, Matt Albers was sent to the minors. But after last night, can the Astros brass really think that was a good decision? Wandy Rodriguez got beat up, and he got beat up badly. And, believe it or not, Brian Moehler also got beat up. Iโve got to tell you, Iโm really glad that the Astros have 12 pitchers on this roster. Iโd hate to think of how bad this team could be with only 11.
The Astros will attempt to break the losing streak tonight. Woody Williams and his 1-6 record and 5.52 ERA get the start. Boy, am I confident.
But Iโm making a break for it this weekend. Iโm off to Chicago, and Iโm going to see the White Sox. Maybe Iโll see some good baseball.
So, someone, what does good baseball look like anyway? โ John Royal
