Good Texan that he is, Lyle Lovett has always had an appreciation of history. On the Lone Star leg of the singer-songwriter’s summer tour with gravel-voiced good buddy John Hiatt, the duo is calling on some of the state’s most historic theaters, including San Antonio’s Majestic, Austin’s Paramount and Galveston’s hurricane-proof grand dame. Just think: If Houston had as much historical pride as one of its favorite musical sons, this tour — an acoustic song swap between the recently appointed 2011 Texas State Musician and Hiatt, whose new album Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns is due in August – might have wound up a little closer to home. No matter, though: The Grand is worth crossing the causeway for anytime, let alone for an Americana twofer this tantalizing.
