William Nicholsons The Retreat from Moscow has nothing to do with Russian history and everything to do with Alice and Edwards 34-year marriage. Edward is withdrawn and unfeeling, while Alice is all dramatic, over-the-top emotion. When she finds out that hes been planning to leave her for a long time and that he is, in fact, involved with another woman, the true battle begins. Thats when their son Jamie steps in to mediate the war between his parents. The drama is punctuated with flourishes of wit that are both funny and biting.
