โIโd gone to Chicago and re-caught the improv bug. Iย thought: Why doesnโt Houston have an improv fest, and why donโt I start it?โย That was the genesis of what became the Houston Improv Festival, according toย festival co-founder Todd Boring. Inside the MATCH,ย Matchbox 3 will be housing more than 23 improv groupsย (approximately 98-plus improvisers!) from across the city and the country.
โ[The lineup] was selected by representatives from the three major [improv] theaters in town: Benji Cooksey from ComedySportz, Jessica Brown and Roger Anderson from Station Theatre, and Hoja Lopez from Beta,โ says Boring.
Local long-form favorites like Baby Knuckle, Flirt Reynoldsย and Max will be joined by out-of-towners like George Lusk (Chicago), Newportย Hounds (Chicago), Laurelly (Los Angeles), A Penny Dreadful (Austin) and Whatย About a Reuben!?! (Denver), among others.
One of the groups Boring is most excited about is Sand, anย Illinois-based duo consisting of Scott Nelson and Michael Brunlieb. Accordingย to Boring: โSo Chicago has [three] main improv theaters โ iO, The Annoyance andย Second City. These guys have trained at all three! Theyโre a real independentย group, they perform weekly and have just made a name for themselves.โ
Another group, History Under The Influence, takes a cue fromย the Comedy Central series Drunk History
and features scenes based on an inebriated retelling of a historicalย anecdote.ย โI really wasnโt convinced
that was going to work,โ Boring admits. โBut those guys are so funny, even ifย [most of them] are stone-cold sober.โ
On the local front, Improv! The Musical is the only musicallyย inclined team on the roster. โThose guys are making magic,โ Boring fawns.ย Produced by CSz Houston, the eight-person team had been producing originalย musicals twice monthly at the Queensbury Theatre, where Boring first discoveredย them. โTheyโve really learned the form,โ he says. โWhen musical improv is done,ย you have a short scene and somebody breaks into song; itโs just as funny as itย gets.โ
Beyond performances, HIF will also be offering workshopsย hosted by both local and guest improvisers, including โthe reigning Cagematch champions of iO West,โ Kellyย Vrooman and Lauren Pritchard. Boring sells them well: โ[Kelly and Lauren] willย just blow people away. [In scenes], they can roll into each other characters,ย multiple characters, like they were changing a jacket.โ
Sand will also be offering workshops during the festival,ย including an extensive six-hour intensive on character development and breakingย the fourth wall. โTheyโre gonna pour into their form,โ Boring says. โWeโreย providing lunch, and [workshop attendees] can just knuckle down and focus onย their craft.โ All workshops will be hosted at Station Theater, located at 1230ย Houston Avenue.
This yearโs Houston Improv Festival also features a unique reunion. โIโmย especially excited for the reunion of Glaundor,โ Boring says. Born out ofย the University of Houstonโs theatre program, Glaundor went on to win the nationalย title at the 2013 College Improv Festival in Chicago. Since then, Glaundorย members like Saurabh Pande and Jason Ronje have graduated to some of theย biggest stages available, including Second City and ComedySportz Chicagoย respectively. โItโs great to get those boys back together, even if itโs justย for a few beers.โ
On a personal level, the improv festival’s co-founder will be breaking oneย of his long-standing rules in honor of the festivalโs fifthย anniversary. โYeah, Iโm breaking my tradition of not performing in my ownย festival to play with [my group] Trek Wars during our Family Friendly slot onย Saturday,โ says Boring. Born out of Station Theater, Boring has played with theย sci-fi-centric group for more than a year, and is happy to say the gang is โfinallyย hitting its stride.โ
Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m., 9 p.m. and ย 11 p.m. ย from April 28 throughย May 1ย atย ย MATCH, 3400 Main.ย For information, call 713-521-4533 or visit matchhouston.org. $20.ย
