My So Called Life likelyย captures your high school years perfectly, and yet youโve probably never heardย of it. One of the great โbrilliant but canceledโ series of the early โ90s, theย Claire Danes vehicle ran for a mere 19 episodes across six months in 1994.ย Yet in that brief stint, the angsty criticalย darling racked up a Golden Globe, four Emmy nominations and a legacy of devotedย fans mourning the loss of a potential hall-of-fame series snuffed before itsย time. But one of those beleaguered fans has big plans to revive the cult series,ย so clear your Mondays.
โThis was the greatest show, maybe ever,โ saysย actor-writer-director and MSCL super-fanย Stephanie Wittels-Wachs. โIt was super ahead of its time, and dealt with issuesย weโre still grappling with today. The third episode was literally titled โGunsย and Gossip.โ [The series] tackles school shootings, sexuality, gender identity,ย female empowerment. And the writing is likely the best teenage writing of allย time.โ The writing will be on full display in Wittels-Wachsโs Rec Room revivalย (entitled My So-Called Mondays), each Monday as a full cast will perform a dramatic re-creation of an episodeโsย script. โI realized: People just want to be home watching Netflix. What if weย bring Netflix to the stage?โ the director asks. โThese [episode] transcriptsย Iโve found are so obviously fan-written, and the stage directions are amazing.ย Theyโre so melodramatic and super emo โ theyโre like a character of their own.โย A character so juicy, Wittels-Wachs has claimed that part for herself.
As a whole, Wittels-Wachs hopes My So-Called Mondays will help establish the identity of her space,ย The Rec Room. โThe whole reason Rec Room was founded was because we hateย theater,โ she blurts out. โWeโre theater artists who are so burnt out onย theater. [This was our way] to just do something fun.โ
The former HSPVA director credits the Chicago art collectiveย known as The Neo-Futurists with helping inspire an enviable atmosphere. โTheย Neo-Futurists do this show every Friday night in Chicago calledย Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind.ย Itโs dependable entertainment you can count on. Itโs fun [for] everyone to getย [drunk] and watch this crazy show.โย
As each Monday lurks closer, Wittels-Wachs finds herselfย beginning to prioritize accommodations. โThese [are] the problems with weeklyย shows,โ the director confides. โYou canโt have actors [attempting] to memorize aย full hour of text each time โ weโre doing like three hours of rehearsal a week.โย The compromise was simply to make each show a staged reading; staged readings are fullย performances with the addition of music stands, so actors can have theirย scripts on deck.
Theatricalizing the teleplays is another priority for theย series. One of Stephanieโs tricks is a rarely used โstaging methodโ called โThe Rasaboxes.โ The director lays it out like this: โThat totally weird thingย where [actors] will step into a box, have a very strong emotional reaction andย then step out [of the box]. Itโs this very โtake-yourself-too-seriouslyโ formย of actor training.โ Additionally, the crew plans to have a type of โGod Mikeโ toย use for the main characterโs inner monologues. Also, if you have a bit of theย acting bug, thereโs a chance you could get a line. โAudience members are goingย to be part of [each] cast. All the teacher roles, Girl #1, Girl #2 โ these sortย of bit roles that have just amazing lines, weโre going to cast the crowd!โ
Ultimately, Wittels-Wachs hopesย My So-Called Mondays can be a much-needed form of escapism. โWeย just wanna keep bringing people back. I mean, not to get too political, but Iย just feel like everything is so horrible right now. So I just want to [be partย of] something fun, and lighthearted and engaging. Letโs all just escape to the โ90s for a little bit, where everything felt just that much lessโฆcrazy.”
