You know that hair. You know those glasses. You know thatย smirk. While you might not yet know his name, Adam Conoverโs face seems to beย everywhere right now. โThe ad campaign theyโve done for the show is remarkable,โย the comedian says. โThough it is a little eerie seeing my face so many places.ย Two years ago, I was anonymous. Now Time Squareโs subway station is just wrapped inย my face, every turn style, every surface. I used to go to that station, but Iย donโt think I could nowโฆitโd be too much like a hall of mirrors.โ
The star of the TruTV edutainment series Adam Ruins Everything will be bringing aย live version of the show to Houstonโs Warehouse Live on September 22ย ย for a special, politically charged hour of laughing and learning. โAs a comic,ย you always feel almost robbed of the laugh when youโre on TV,โ Conover says.ย โPeople are laughing, but theyโre spread across the country. I want to hear it!ย So live shows are fun.โ Describing the show as a blend of Adam Ruins Everything-style informational humor and a more traditionalย stand-up set, the performer says heโll be presenting facts, images,ย punchlines and videos on a projector screen behind him, in between live bits of material. โWithย luck, it should have the effect of a really funny fast-moving comedy TED talk.โ
Fully aware of the lightning rod of controversy andย discussion the 2016 election has become, the live show will focus on politics in aย broad sense. โWe did an episode on voting rights last year,โ the comic says. “Itย was just beyond impossible to fit everything we wanted into it. So this is anย opportunity to do an hour of new material on the election and democracy, inย general.โ
But for those expecting a full-on Trump/Hillary roast,ย Conover would prefer to curb those expectations. โThere are an immense numberย of incredibly talented comedians doing comedy about the news of the day. So Iโm not even trying to compete in that ring of satire because the level ofย talent there is just too high,โ he says. โI donโt want to go toe-to-toe withย Sam Bee on my best day.โ
Instead, Conover points out, heโs adding something new toย the virtual conversation. โWeโre going for the historical perspective. If we doย touch on Hillary or Trump, itโs because people feel cynical about thisย election. People on the streets hate them both so much, and say that this hasย got to be the low point for our democracy. So I wanted to find out: Is thisย really the worst our democracy has ever been? What about this election cycleย have we actually seen before โ stuff we may have forgotten from the past. Andย what truly is unique to this point in time? Those are questions we seek toย answer.โ
Before moving to newly re-invented comedy station TruTV,ย Adam Ruins Everything began life as a digital series through CollegeHumor,ย where Conover used to write. โI started off in the early wild west days of webย video [with] a group called Old English,โ he says. โAfter about ten yearsย of stand-up in New York, and doing sketch with UCB, I found CollegeHumor, whichย is just this open landscape of a creative environment where you can writeย whatever you want and see it come to life. It was the perfect petri dish forย this show.โ
As the series continues, Adamย Ruins Everything has potential to make Adam Conover a household name (or atย least, perhaps, a household face). But before he hit it large on basic cable,ย Adamโs pride โ something he says โdidnโt get enough press at the time” โ was aย low-budget film called The Exquisiteย Corpse Project, which debuted digitally on the revered comedy websiteย Splitsider.com. โIt was such a cool project, but basically it involved each ofย the five of us [members of Old English] writing one-fifthย of aย screenplay, but we could only see the last five pages of the previous personโsย draft,โ Conover laughs.ย โThen itย actually turned into a documentary about the making of the movie, and ourย relationship as a group working together.โ Conover stars in the film alongside BoJack Horseman creator Raphaelย Bob-Waksberg and Late Night with Sethย Meyers writer Chioke Nassor, and it can be purchased online for five bucks.
With two seasons under his belt, Conover hopes people willย sample both his TruTV series and its live counterpart. But until then, heโsย content being recognized on the street as the famous guy with the tall hair. โThoughย my hair doesnโt get that high in person,โ he confesses. ย โThat kind of height can only be achieved withย the help of a trained professional.โ
One performance is scheduled for September 22 at 8 p.m. atย Warehouse Live, 813 Emanuel. For information, call 713-225-5483 or visitย axs.com. $32.50.
