Best Bar – Rice Village: Under The Volcano
What’s not to love about Under The Volcano? The bar name’s origin, the decorations, those frozen screwdrivers…the credentials go on where the imagination stops, but the list of superlatives has given enough credence to crown the Rice Village area watering hole a distinction in this year’s Best Of Houston list.
Its moniker draws inspiration from English writer Malcolm Lowry’s novel that tells the story of Geoffrey Firmin, an alcoholic British consul in the Mexican city of Quauhnahuac, on the Day of the Dead in November 1939. The Los Angeles Times says, “Lowry’s masterpiece. . . has a claim to being regarded as one of the ten most consequential works of fiction produced in [the twentieth] century.” Houston Press asserts the River Oaks establishment holds claim to one of the most consequential bars in the area.
The art and décor allude to the man cave/she shed of dreams. The friendly staff and mix of craft cocktails along with traditional beverages keep the good times rolling. As a bonus, when the weather is just right, the two patios provide a welcoming ambiance.
The funky yellow building is 100 percent a safe bet for finding a smooth beverage to sip on while catching up with friends on a slow afternoon. If this is what the Day of the Dead looks and feels like, we vote it should happen every day.
