This year marks the 35th annual Dance Month at the Jewish Community Center. This colorful event brings together prominent teachers, choreographers and performers. One of the high points of Dance Month is
Four + Four, Celebration of Dance Concert, which features eight dynamic companies split between two nights (January 24 and 25). Urban Souls Dance Company will be among those performing; Artistic Director Harrison Guy tells us of their piece titled
A mile in his shoes, which fuses modern dance with hip-hop motifs: “This work is our answer and participation in the Black Lives Matter movement. This piece declares that black lives not only matter, but they deserve to [be] full, complete lives in the light.”
Houston Ballet II will perform Stanton Welch’s Blue — a vibrant, balletic work with moments of melancholy matching the energy of the color. Oliver Halkowich’s Dear Nancy is an organic, pedestrian piece performed without pointe shoes that diverges from Houston Ballet’s usual repertoire. 7:30 p.m. Saturday; 7 p.m. Sunday. 5601 South Braeswood. For information, call 713-551-7255 or visit erjcchouston.org. $25.
