5th Annual Tomato Fest

The main draw at the 5th Annual Tomato Fest is the tomato tasting. Offerings come from backyard gardeners who have just a handful of tomato plants, to family farmers who have a couple dozen acres. There's also going to be a Tomato Doctor with growing advice, a Tomato Cook-off with celebrity chefs such as Hugo Ortega from Hugo's and Dylan Murray of benjy's on Washington, and other local foodies who will be demonstrating cooking techniques and recipes using the red fruit. So, will there be any tomato fights? "We did think about that," admits Julia Trainer, Bayou City Farmer's Market coordinator, "but we probably aren't going to have enough [tomatoes] to do tosses." Instead there'll be a good-luck water dousing, which supposedly brings lots of rain for the crops. (Trainer assures us no one will be splashed until they give permission.) 8 a.m. to noon. 3000 Richmond. For information, call 713-880-5540 or visit www.urbanharvest.org. Free.
