A God Among Atheists: Richard Dawkins at Wortham Center

Last night at the Wortham Center, Progressive Forum Houston presented Richard Dawkins, the British rock-star atheist author. Dawkins is on a book tour promoting his latest work The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution. His previous books The God Delusion, The Selfish Gene, and The Blind Watchmaker have sold millions of copies all over the world.

Dawkins' previous work argued for evolution, but his new book aims to indisputably prove evolution in a single volume. The charismatic Brit is on a mission. Well-known as a public speaker; he's on the front lines of what's described as "militant atheism."

Dawkins spent the evening stepping through his work chapter by chapter, describing the evidence presented and its significance and history. He read a few selections--they were scientific but fairly lyrical. And he never lost his wit throughout the evening, poking fun at redneck neighbors, intelligent design, and a certain 40 percent of the population that believes some book is literally true.

The question-and-answer session was brief, but he tackled some important questions. One person wondered what Dawkins thought would be next step in biological sciences. He answered by describing the need to understand consciousness and link it to evolution.

Before and after the show, Dawkins met his fans in the green room and the main foyer of the Wortham. He was more than happy to smile for photos, sign books and mingle with the sold-out crowd.
