A Witch of a Show

Los Angeles-based The Warlocks have the same name as the ´60s band that went on to become the Grateful Dead, but the similarities between the two stop there. The band is actually more akin to the heroin-soaked Velvet Underground, who, strangely enough, were also known as the Warlocks before a name change. There's no telling what permutation of the eight-piece band, which is led by Bobby Hecksher and sometimes features two drummers and four guitarists, will show up at The Proletariat today. But you can be sure they'll fill the air with a steady wash of dreamy, druggy rock that also calls to mind the Jesus and Mary Chain, Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized. The Warlocks' jaunt to Houston is just one of a few shows they'll headline between duties opening a nationwide tour with Sisters of Mercy. If you need a soundtrack to get wasted to, check this trippy act out.
