Albina Shagimuratova

In the opera world, it’s rare for a vocalist to establish much of an international presence before middle age — this is especially true for sopranos. This is partly because the best voices take training and maturation, and partly because of opera’s institutionalized celebration of older, established diva-types in its main roles. It is to her great credit, then, that 28-year-old soprano Albina Shagimuratova, who will perform in the recital “Bel Canto,” has not only won over a number of judges at prestigious worldwide competitions, but got a legendary diva, Frederica von Stade, to admit that she was “stunned” by a recent performance. Shagimuratova, currently with the Houston Grand Opera Studio, appeared in this spring’s La Bohème and The Magic Flute; today she will sing works by Mozart, Rachmaninov and others at 7:30 p.m. May 10. Houston Baptist University, MCAC-Beilin Chapel, 7502 Fondren. For information, call 713-395-3301 or visit $25 to $45.
