Next May when The Rite of Spring is performed at Wortham Center's Brown Theater, it will be by New York City-based Shen Wei Dance Arts, making its first appearance in Houston.
The Switzerland-based dance company Béjart, in a return Houston engagement, was to perform the Stravinsky composition to coincide with its 100th anniversary. But Béjart has canceled its touring season, Houston's Society for the Performing Arts announced today.
Béjart released this statement:
Due to financial constraints, reduction in government support, and unforeseen complications particular to the touring of North America by Bejart Ballet Lausanne, we regret to inform you that the company has cancelled their entire Spring 2013 tour. We appreciate your understanding of the situation in light of prevailing conditions in the arts at present. Thank you.
