Do you have fancy plans for New Year's Eve, or just want to dress like you do? Even if you're ringing in 2014 on your couch with a pizza and a bottle of wine, it's kind of fun to dress up like a disco ball.
And because we know you are too busy unselfishly shopping for everyone else in your life, and not even thinking a little bit about yourself as you spend, and spend, and spend, we've compiled a list of pretty, shiny things for you to don on January 31, 2013. Ladies--let's sparkle.
On Your Face
Ladies, break out the shiniest face paint you've got rolling around at the back of your makeup drawer. All of those metallic eyeliners and sparkly eyeshadows you can't wear to work? Time to work it.
• Go crazy with a metallic, using Stila Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eye Shadow ($32, including .06 oz. primer, made especially for the foil shadows)--maybe something vaguely Egyptian, with a boxy cat eye in black eyeliner with longevity, like Lancôme Artliner ($30). • Keep it simple with the just-released Urban Decay Naked 3 palette ($52) but add color and shine and sparkle with a Vintage Heavy Metal Liquid Liner that are currently half-price ($9) on the Urban Decay website. • For big-impact lips, the new Marc Jacobs Lip Vinyls are unbelievable. Not too drying, incredible longevity, a fresh, plumping burst of peppermint (no worries--no burn), and your choice of Sheer or Full Coverage formulas. The $28 price tag feels steep until you realize the value. How did the guy who made Daisy make this?
Fingers and Toes
Essie has a new 'Encrusted' Collection that is one hundred percent sparkle; in addition to plenty of gold and silver, there is "Belugaria," an almost-black with multi-color sparkles throughout and a "caviar texture". "On a Silver Platter" looks interesting: violet holographic glitter and antique silver in a pearlescent gold polish base.
Check out Burberry's new Festive Beauty collection for holiday-appropriate metallic neutrals in "nude golds"; this collection will be right in line with the Urban Decay Naked 3 palette. Burberry included a chic gold nail polish in Festive Beauty that will work hard long after New Year's Eve.
The Internet is also on fire over Dior's Diorific Vernis Gold Coffret trio. Three limited time-only shades in limited-time only packaging, and each a shiny, shimmery thing of beauty all its own. Very limited, so you may want to call for availability--and no online sales!
On Your Bod
If you hung on to last year's disco ball dress, by all means pull it right back out and wear it--it's been a year, after all, and a real friend will pretend it's a new dress even if she notices it's not. Vintage and consignment shops also usually have some pretty funky, sparkly things, so you might find a new/old treasure if you care to look. But for those looking for a quick-and-dirty solution, let's shop online.
J. Crew is still pretty reliable, so even though the prices on their more exclusive collections have soared, you can still get good investment pieces without the sticker shock. There are two eye-catching J.Crew skirts that are NYE-appropriate: the $138 gold striped mini is a wearable piece you'll reach for all year, while the $250 tea-length J. Crew Collection midi-skirt is a well-priced investment you can wear to weddings or pack along on vacation. Over at Zara, it's hard to decide whether the $80 beaded Jacquard skirt is cuter or if this navy-and-black striped sequined mini is the winner.
