“Carlos Cruz-Diez: Color in Space and Time

Art’s contemporary era has seen trends come and go, but one theme has maintained its supremacy throughout: color. Carlos Cruz-Diez has spent his decades-long career exploring color — and not just by painting bright stuff. In his view, according to notes accompanying “Carlos Cruz-Diez: Color in Space and Time,” which is on exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, “color is not a pigment on a solid surface but a ‘situation’ that results from the projection of light on objects and the way this light is processed by the human eye.” Okay, we can see that. The exhibition uses paintings, prints, models, videos, room-size chromatic environments and even a 3-D replica of Cruz-Diez’s Paris studio to reveal his method and reinforce his point: Color is a participatory experience, not something you merely look at. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 12:15 to 7 p.m. Sundays.
