Central Library Grand Reopening Celebration

After two years and $17 million, expectations for the newly renovated Houston Public Central Library are high. Be the first to see the library enter the 21st century — with a cafe, gift shop, art gallery and new technology — at the Central Library Grand Reopening Celebration. The two-day event will feature multicultural dance groups, author talks, and games and rides for kiddos. Music performances today include Arkansas folk duo Trout Fishing in America. Also on today’s bill are children’s authors Bill Crider and Ellen Hopkins, and local fiction writer Katherine Center. Tomorrow brings Bapsi Sidhwa, who received Pakistan’s highest honor in the arts. Now a Houstonian, Sidhwa writes about India and Pakistan, women’s issues and immigration. Find out what a state-of-the-art library looks like from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow. 500 McKinney. For information, call 832-393-1313 or visit www.houstonlibrary.org. Free.
