We think the contestants in the Victorian Bed Races, part of this year's Dickens on the Strand, rolling down Galveston's Mechanic Street might make the old guy smile a little, wherever he is. The new event has got to be one of the silliest and most hilarious of the season. Among the costumes and the funnel cakes, the parades and the general merriment that entering into the Dickensian world of Scrooge and Tiny Tim can bring will be several teams, dressed in full Dickens-era regalia, racing on full-size bed frames that have been equipped with wheels. Prizes will be awarded for Best Decorated, Fastest Time and, of course, People's Choice. All the proceeds go to charities, one being the Galveston Historical Society, so spectators and racers alike can get into the true spirit of giving hey, isn't that exactly what Dickens's Scrooge learned about in A Christmas Carol? 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Strand Historical District, Strand at 24th Street, Galveston. For information, visit www.galvestonhistory.org. $9 to $12.
