Fifty Shades of Grey -- The Houston Public Library's Dirty Dozen

You're going to have a bit of a wait if you're hoping to check out a copy of the erotic best-seller Fifty Shades of Grey at the Houston Public Library. There are only 12 hard copies of the book, five e-books and five audio-books for the entire 42-branch library system, which serves some 4 million readers a year.

We estimate half of the library's readers are adults. So let's see, 22 copies for two million adult readers, each one keeps their copy out a week, carry the seven, add the five and hmmm, looks like it will only take 1,750 years (give or take) for everyone to get a look at Fifty Shades of Grey.

This is in comparison to the first Harry Potter book, which had a total of 200 hard copies in the system when it first became available.

Needless to say, there is a waiting list for Fifty Shades of Grey and its two sequels (each of which also has a dozen hard copies in the system). "It has the most holds on it in our system right now," says Sandra Fernandez, public relations manager for HPL.

But at least HPL has some copies on the shelves. Fernandez notes that at least one library in Florida has banned the book altogether. She says that in her ten years with the library, no book has been pulled from the shelves once purchased (there were a couple of goofy science books that got pulled years ago, but that was because their information was inaccurate).

Tick, tock, people, only 1,750 years more to go before our name comes up on the HPL waiting list for Fifty Shades of Grey.
