Forbidden Broadway

Even the greatest moments of musical theater lend themselves to satire, and it may be that those soaring the highest are the most fun to watch when skewered by the lance of wit. Forbidden Broadway, a spoof of current and recent Broadway hits, had a long-running stint in Manhattan beginning in 1982, and was updated a number of times by its creator, Gerard Alessandrini. Its various versions have been performed more than 9,000 times in some 200 American cities, plus some abroad, winning a number of awards. In an interview with Nancy Rosati for Talkin’ Broadway, Alessandrini said, “I think our parodies of Titanic and Grand Hotel ran longer than the [original] shows did.” The current version, like all the preceding ones, was written and directed by Alessandrini, and promises to deliver incisive rewritten versions of Broadway blockbusters. You needn’t have seen the shows to get the humor — sketch comedy provides its charm, and you’ll probably recognize the tunes.
