“Fragments from Augustine the Saint”

Fragments from Augustine the Saint is a small, relatively spare opera with tremendous spiritual clout, so it has much in common with the space it will be performed in, the Rothko Chapel. Fragments is based on the prolific writings of the philosopher-saint, especially his notions of the “dark night of the soul” and the act of inner transformation. The chamber opera, written for tenor, harp, clarinet and percussion, fuses song and dance with an artistic exploration of the subconscious mind.

Young Houston tenor Kenneth Gayle will sing, joined by the lithe, lovely Lauren Anderson, formerly a principal dancer with the Houston Ballet. Composer Dr. Beverly Grigsby, now 80 years old and well known for her work in electronic music and music technology, will attend both performances. 7:30 p.m. 1409 Sul Ross. For information and tickets, call 713-524-9839 or visit www.rothkochapel.org. Free with ticket.
Wed., May 21, 7:30 p.m.; Thu., May 22, 7:30 p.m., 2008
