Gallery Scene: Opening This Week

This Thursday, the much-anticipated "Bayou City Noir" opens at the Museum of Printing History, and we've got a pair of recommendations each for Friday and Saturday.

Bayou City Noir: The Photographs of Marvin Zindler In the early '50s, when Houston was the nation's murder capital, famous Houstonian Marvin Zindler was a freelance photographer. This exhibit, organized by Houston Chronicle copy editor John Gonzales (who stumbled across the photos while researching a topic for his Bayou City History blog), presents some of the white-haired newsman's most arresting crime-related photos. The bulk of the images on display were found in the Houston Public Library archives, and the Zindler family contributed some additional items - including some tear sheets Marvin had saved from his freelancing days. Approximately 50 photos comprise the exhibition. Opening reception Thursday, March 24, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m., The Museum of Printing History, 1324 West Clay Street. 713-522-4652.

Larassa Kabel: And All of This So Far From Heaven Des Moines-based Kabel's lifelike and intimate drawings. Opening reception Friday, March 25, 6:30 - 9 p.m., Peel Gallery, 4411 Montrose. 713.520.8122.

Charlotte Smith: Somewhere on the fringe... Smith's fourth solo exhibition at Anya Tish, the show continues the artist's exploration of painting as sculpture. Stacked droplets of paint become "ropes" sprouting directly from the wall. Opening reception Friday, March 25, 6:00 - 8:30 p.m., Anya Tish Gallery, 4411 Montrose. 713.524.2299.

Michael Bise: Blood Poisoning We're fans of Bise's remarkable drawings, inspired by personal experience and addressing issues of abuse, religious fervor and the strange experience of childhood. Opening reception Saturday, March 26, 6 - 8 p.m., Moody Gallery, 2815 Colquitt. 713-526-9911.

Chad Hopper and Amanda Jones: Chisel Story Rust Photography and paper collage by Austin artists Hopper and Jones. Opening reception Saturday, March 26, 7 - 9 p.m., Domy Books, 1709 Westheimer. 713-523-3669.
