It’s February, and on Galveston Island that means one thing: Mardi Gras. The annual mega-party kicks off this week with celebrations across the city. More than 250,000 people will cram onto the island between now and Fat Tuesday, wandering around town with beers in hand, enjoying everything from concerts to parades to impromptu bead-tossing – and all the partial nudity that may entail. Grab a bite, check out the Royal Court of Zoots and Zaftigs, the Mystical Krewe of Aquarius and all sorts of music, from country to rockabilly to reggae and alternative. The point is to exhaust yourself sufficiently – who needs to be alert for March, anyway? The Stars on the Brazos Krewe Balcony Party kicks things off at 5 p.m. today. Hours vary. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Through February 16. For a full schedule, call 888-425-4753 or visit www.mardigrasgalveston.com. Free.

Fridays-Sundays. Starts: Feb. 5. Continues through Feb. 16, 2010
