Two of Hollywood's brightest stars will be honored at the Houston Film Critics Society Awards 2010: Sissy Spacek and George Clooney. Spacek will be given the society's Lifetime Achievement Award and Clooney gets the nod for the Humanitarian Award. While Spacek and Clooney might not be in attendance (as of press time there was no confirmation that either star would attend the ceremony), local film fiends, critics, curators and filmmakers will be. Awards will be handed out for the usual categories (film, director, actor, actress). There will be lots of clips and, yes, heartfelt acceptance speeches. The real fun starts after the ceremony when the crowd gets to schmooze and gossip, er, we mean, discuss highly serious, meaningful issues. 4 p.m. Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 1001 Bissonnet. Keep the Houston Press Free... Since we started the Houston Press, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Houston, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" membership program, allowing us to keep covering Houston with no paywalls.
