Houston Press Artopia 2010

It's a little difficult to describe the Houston Press Artopia 2010. Is it a concert? An art exhibit? Tasting party? Awards ceremony? It's all those things and a little more. Think of it as a huge bash celebrating the arts and culture in Houston. Performers include the Dominic Walsh Dance Theater (Best Dance Company winner in last year's Houston Press Best of Houston¨ Awards) and the fiery Cuadro La Tempestad Flamenco. Graffiti master GONZO247 will be among the dozens of artists exhibiting their work. And samples from several local restaurants and bars, such as Last Concert Cafe, Sushi Bar Restaurant and Cork Soakers, are on the menu.

The highlight of the evening is the 2nd Annual MasterMind Awards Ceremony. Three individuals or small organizations that have made an impact on the local arts scene will be recognized for their contributions - actually, recognized and paid, as the award includes a $2,000 prize. Last year's winners have had mixed luck since taking home their $2,000 prize. The Hightower High School Broadcast Academy and The Fodice Foundation are both busy courting grant money, but Nova Arts Project, an alternative theater group, saw one of its co-founders leave and is now in the process of reorganizing. 8 to 11 p.m. Winter Street Studios, 2101 Winter Street. For information, call 713-280-2890 or visit www.houstonpress.com. $40 to $75.
Sat., Jan. 30, 8-11 p.m., 2010
