Pete Vonder Haar, longtime columnist for the Houston Press has been recognized in a national journalism contest for his film reviews.

He placed second in the Arts Criticism category for a collection of his 2024 “Reviews For the Easily Distracted,” in the competition sponsored by the Association of Alternative News Mediaโ€™s AAN Awards.

Winners were announced this past weekend at the AN annual convention. The judges noted:

โ€œPete is the rare seasoned critic of films (or anything else, really) who doesnโ€™t have an axe to grind or peers to impress with endless arcane references. Still writing in service to the reader as opposed to his own ego, his Reviews For The Easily Distracted are knowledgeable and still critical without unhelpful cynicism undercutting substance, and could actually help steer people toward or away from a new release. Most of all, though, Peteโ€™s writing is funny, and even laugh-out-loud hilarious at times.โ€
