Houston Young Playwright’s Exchange

Terminal illness, nasty name-calling, an existential crisis — these are just some of the ideas being explored by local teens in the Alley Theatre’s 12th annual presentation of Houston Young Playwright’s Exchange (HYPE for short). Earlier this year, work by six teenagers was selected to undergo development at the Alley Theatre, and now the fruit of all that labor will be presented in staged readings. The writers include Avital Bisk, Austin Cooke, James Monaghan, Chelsea Stanley, Chase Wilkinson and Judy Wu. Only three plays will be presented at a time. Series A includes A Moment Alone with Johnny Stripe, Memories of a Man and My Last Apology. Series B includes One-Year Mark, Sticks and Stones and The Right Decision. You’ll have to attend both to get the full picture of what’s on the minds of smart adolescents this year. Series A is August 1 at 7:30 p.m. and August 2 at 2:30 p.m.; Series B is August 2 at 7:30 p.m. and August 3 at 2:30 p.m. 615 Texas.
